Firstly...

To everyone who cheered me on and offered congrats, THANK YOU!

To be honest, after I posted on Saturday I wasn't much use to anyone for a few hours, and then the polishing bug bit me hard.

It's fun, so far– lots of fun. I found a niche today for an additional scene that I just couldn't think about while getting-the-story-down. It fixes something that wasn't a problem, but rated as a grey area. It also provides room for a scene that, had I thought of it while planning, I would've tossed out for fear that it would slow the pace. But now, with the story told, I can let the story dictate to the way I'm writing that scene. Think: you're packing books in a box and the size of the box dictates to the way you pack, and not to the number of books (in other words, if you pack 'em right, you'll get more into it).

And as a bonus today, YouTube provided me with visuals of the *exact* helo maneuver I use in this story (one of them, anyway. Ahem). Perfect 17-second clip: the maneuver and nothing else. I think I might place a link to it in Notes prefacing the story, and hope like hell that people click it before reading. If they do that, I probably won't get dumb comments like, "You can't do that in a helicopter!"

I get to go play a game now, but not just any game. There are two ways you can play this one: for fun, and for *real*. Kinda.

The game is Enemy Engaged: Comanche versus Hokum. It's a helo sim that has been modded so much that it can be called a true study sim. Instrumentation and aircraft performance are accurate to the point where you can fly these helos instruments-only (i.e., without lookin' out the windows). Get the right stick, throttle/collective, and pedal system, and this sim will teach you to fly a real chopper. Rather, you'll crash a lot and eventually learn how not to crash... and this is considerably cheaper than crashing the real thing.

It's also handy for research, or just playing around with helo maneuvers to get a feel for writing a scene.

Which is what I'm gonna go and do right now.

But it's like that other time, where we were made to think that someone else got dead (actually, this has happened several times. Do they have any grasp on the concept of originality?). They paid very close attention to various boards, and voila! he wasn't dead. The only reason they didn't do that with Kate was because Sasha Alexander wanted out.

I think the Muse decided not to push me too hard, or maybe she's got a hangover– over the last couple of days, I decided that she had to be kicking along on both steroids and speed. That wouldn't have been so bad if she wasn't already the Oglaf type of muse. Yeesh...

Anyhow, I've got a break. Here's some STK/TTA stats, so far:

Very close to finishing this *thing*. Hoping to start polishing on Friday/Saturday.

Mandy asked if I'd take a 'vacation' after finishing this story, or would the polishing commence at once. It has to be 'at once,' or I'm liable to say, "Yay! It's finished! I'll just put it in that don't-show-it-to-anyone file now! *There*. Nice'n'tidy, isn't it?" And she said (I love my wife), "I'll kill you! I've been waiting *months* to read this story!" Umm, so yeah. Polishing will start as soon as the story is all down.

I shouldn't have taken that click-and-scroll over to LJ. But seeing as I did:

Heads up to anyone Spanish, or resident of any other country where bullfighting is legal.

Do not dare to tell me that bullfighting is an art form, that the matadores and the torero are artists.

Everyone who gets in that ring is a gutless fuck. Everyone who thinks it's manly to torture and inhumanely kill animals, is a gutless fuck. Sixty percent of Spain, YOU are gutless fucks. Only the Catalonians are exempt: well done for enforcing the ban in 2010.

And I don't care what King Juan Carlos says, and neither does the EU. When they ban bullfighting, Juan Carlos, you won't be able to influence your politicians enough to enforce your boast that Spain will leave the EU. When last I checked, Spain's not exactly a thriving economy. Withdrawal from the EU will require that the state cuts a whole bunch of expenditures like, let's say, the Royal Stipend. So STFU. A royal gutless fuck is no less a gutless fuck.

Anyone who tortures an animal, or supports the torture of animals, no matter how dangerous the beasts are, is less likely to recognize abuse of children, women, and the elderly as abuse.

It never fails to amaze me, how often the word 'courage' is equated with cruelty. But to call cruelty art? That's just sick.

I wish I could line 'em up for target practice

Briefly de-cave-ing (un-spelunking?) to rant.

Gun ignorance in fic is starting to drive me nuts, mostly because there are sites like the Internet Movie Firearms Database that covers not only firearms used in movies, but also in TV shows, anime, and video games. It also has a Guns section that lists several—though not all—categories of man-portable (usually single operator) firearms.

What that means is that the facts are just a Google search and a click away, so gun ignorance in fic is a mark of bone-idle laziness. I'd have the same thing to say if I was talking about something I don't care about, but which I happened to learn about in order to write fic, like... Oh, I dunno. How about fashion?

Here's a short list of things that I call gun ignorance.

"Hero drew his 22 caliber Glock and shot Big Brawny Bad Guy dead with one shot to the chest from 20 meters/yards!"

O RLY?

~ It's a Glock 22, as in Model 22
~ It is chambered in .40 S&W, *NOT* .22 caliber
~ Glock does not factory-produce a single pistol in .22 caliber
~ Furthermore, unless Big Brawny Bad Guy is a rotting corpse, a regular .22 caliber round will not gain even 1 inch of penetration from a range of as few as 5 meters. In other words, he ain't gonna die

"Down to his very last magazine, the Special Ops Sniper stood up and fired his Barrett .50 caliber sniper rifle at 13 very distant running Bad Guys! In just one minute, he got a kill with every shot!"

O RLY?

~ Congrats, you got the name and caliber right! Oh wait. You know that there are several models of Barrett in .50 cal, right? Right.
...so here's the BUT:
~ The Barrett M82 .50 weighs 31lb/14kg. It's really heavy but it's called 'the Light .50.' That should tell you that other Barretts are *heavier*
~ It has a recoil like a giraffe's lion-killing kick, and that and its weight means that not even a 30-yr-old Arnie Schwarzenegger could fire it accurately while standing
~ The Barrett .50's mags take ten rounds only
...and it only gets worse...
~ Sniping is not point-and-shoot. 5 aimed shots in one minute is considered good, as long as you don't check on how close they are to the target. The *stationary* target.

And now for the UBER-annoying bits of gun ignorance:

"Heroine flipped off the safety on her .38 revolver!"

~ 99% OF REVOLVERS DO NOT HAVE MANUAL SAFETIES!
~ 1% of revolvers that do have manual safeties are either museum pieces, or are meant for target shooting, or are very expensive and are not issued to law enforcement officers

"The FBI agent shot Bad Guy with his huge Colt Python pistol!"

~ The Colt Python is huge, you're right, but it's a REVOLVER
~ The FBI is very strict about guns, and while they allow certain sworn agents to purchase and register their own handguns, revolvers are VERBOTEN, or in English, NOT ALLOWED

~ The term is DOUBLE-BARRELED
~ There is no such thing as a factory-made double-barreled pump action! If that Bad Guy had a DB pump, it was homemade, and he'd probably have blown himself up before doing any damage to the door.

~ If he's so innocent why's he got an illegal weapon?
~ And how'd he even get an MP5? Heckler&Koch don't sell the MP5 to anyone except government agencies and the military.

And I could go on and on and ON.

There's so much advice out there for writers, about DETAILS. It boils down to this– getting them right will greatly please a few people, only a few, but those people will end up recommending your work to all their friends. Getting details ridiculously and needlessly wrong will brand you as an idiot to a few people, just a few, but those few people might have many friends, and those many friends might trust the judgment of those few people, who say, "Don't bother reading that. It's crap."

If in doubt about weapon details, and ya don't feel like looking them up, for gods' sakes, please *generalize*. Thus: "He/she fired his/her gun/revolver/pistol/rifle/shotgun." I have so much respect for writers who do that. It means that they're tipping their hats to knowledgeable readers. To all of you wise folks, THANK YOU.

To the bone-idle lazy writers out there, kindly report to the range for target practice. You're the targets, and I need the practice.

Joy! ...actually, no, not really...

I should've put it together about 2 weeks ago, when I started to get more emails from knowledgeable folks, deluded folks, and bloody mansplainers: Kidon was recced.

During correspondence today with one of the people who read the story, I finally got the brilliant idea of asking how he'd found it. The odd thing is, it was recced *way* outside of fandom, in a members-only forum for LGBTQ firearm owners. My fav quote: "It's lesbian fanfiction but none of that fluffy stuff."

What I'm not happy about is most of the email (and a few comments that I deleted) that the rec has generated. I've gotten some really nice emails, but also some whacky ones, and *GRRR* mansplainer mail. Seeing as the rec is now more than 2 weeks old, hopefully it'll generate less email.

Anyway, this post is something of an explanation for the new future-dated post up there, below my fic list post.

Also, a question: given that the rec was posted in an LGBTQ forum, is that really '*way* outside of fandom'? Is anything LGBTQ truly outside of fandom?

There was an accidental nap-that-became-sleep last night, and usually after one of those I'm rather muddled...

But not today! I'm having one of those World, cower, and rue my very existence! mornings. Ego is huge, and I'm enjoying that while it lasts, dammit, because it's so damn rare (and short-lived) that the folks who know me really well, who know how little self-confidence I usually have, call it a very.good.thing and are never annoyed by it (of course, if it did annoy them... TOUGH!).

And why am I so grinful and ego-hyped?

Because I'm a good writer. Because the story I've been working on is huge, but very tight. Because my time-line clocks like it's on a stopwatch. Because I've just nailed an exceptionally difficult subplot transition. And because I don't have to drop the major twist to this story, the very twist that truly earns this tale the label THRILLER.

And dammit, just for today I'm gonna be chuffed and proud of the compliments I've received from my team so far, like "un-put-down-able" and "page-turner" and "exhausting pace" and all the other comments anent needing a seatbelt to keep from falling off the edge-of-the-seat.

But to everyone who's read along so far (THANK YOU!)...

Ya ain't seen nothing yet!

My Roget's just fell apart. If any book should be oversewn bound, it's Roget's Thesaurus. Dammit. Instead it's got stupid so-called 'perfect' binding, with everything glued. And it can't be fixed. All this copy is good for now is recycling, and I don't like that. I like to replace an old edition of whichever reference book with a new(er) one, and give the old one to someone who can use it.

Hmm *thinks*.

Time to hunt an older Roget's with stitch binding, and rely on the Internet for newer words. I'll have time to get used to that seeing as I'm switching to a Collins Gem Thesaurus that's 34 years old, only 2 years younger than me. And yes, it's stitch-bound.

When 'Hillz' herself added a submission to Texts from Hillary, I thought, Dudes, there is no frickin' way you can top that... and as it turns out, the dudes in question came to the same conclusion.

Adam and Stace quit while way ahead of anything they could've imagined just a week ago (*only* a week!).

If you don't know what I'm talking about, that's understandable. Texts from Hillary was 'born' on Wednesday April 4th and I fell over it on the following Sunday night. Umm, and now it's over, but I think it's a meme that'll go down in the history books, or at least attain the title "Stuff of Legend."

Regarding CISPA

I said to law_nerd in email that I think this post will surprise some people, but perhaps it won't surprise those who've gotten to know me. When writing fiction I conduct my research very seriously. When it comes to RL stuff, I conduct research almost as if it's a job from which I'll get fired if I miss a salient point.

That said...

The hype over CISPA really is hype.

However, I am definitely not calling the "H.R.3523 Cyber Intelligence Protection and Sharing Act" a good thing, because right now it isn't. In some parts it's too vaguely worded, and therefore open to broad interpretation that can result in a lot of rightfully unhappy people.

But my point is, as Representatives and co-sponsors Rogers (R-MI) and Ruppersberger (D-MD) say, SOPA and CISPA are as alike as apples and oranges. The easiest way to prove that is to look at the two bills' prime targets (highly simplified):

Had SOPA passed, YouTube would be so much dust right now.

If CISPA passes, well, groups like Anonymous had better watch out.

CISPA aims to protect R&D and other valuable corporate and defense tech information, by enabling information sharing. And the type of information is very clearly described:

'(6) CYBER THREAT INFORMATION- The term 'cyber threat information' means information directly pertaining to a vulnerability of, or threat to a system or network of a government or private entity, including information pertaining to the protection of a system or network from--

'(A) efforts to degrade, disrupt, or destroy such system or network; or

'(B) theft or misappropriation of private or government information, intellectual property, or personally identifiable information.

CISPA also aims to enable the US government to share classified information with people who are not, at present, cleared to view that information:

'(2) CYBER THREAT INTELLIGENCE- The term 'cyber threat intelligence' means information in the possession of an element of the intelligence community directly pertaining to a vulnerability of, or threat to, a system or network of a government or private entity, including information pertaining to the protection of a system or network from--

'(A) efforts to degrade, disrupt, or destroy such system or network; or

'(B) theft or misappropriation of private or government information, intellectual property, or personally identifiable information.

So let's get to the grist now. Why is everyone so upset about this bill? They're upset because they haven't done their research. They're also rightfully upset because until yesterday (April 10th), there'd been no real explanation from government of this bill and its intentions.

"There is no censorship of websites, or shutting down of websites in this bill," said Rep. Ruppersberger. "The government doesn't have any authority to do that. And we are not involving ourselves in anyone's personal computers, or anything of that nature. That's clear. It's not in the bill. And if it's put out there that it is, that's factually incorrect."

To be clear, here's what CISPA will not and cannot directly enable:

~ Censorship, of any kind
~ Website shut-downs, of any kind
~ Suspension/throttling of any private individual's internet access

And this is rather telling: that dirty phrase copyright infringement is not to be found anywhere in H.R.3523, aka CISPA. Another telling thing is the marked absence of Hollywood backing for this bill. Why is that? It cannot be used to do the RIAA and the MPAA any good whatsoever. As much as that lot would like to think so, nothing they know and none of their R&D is likely to affect national security.

You are not likely to affect US national security either, and that being so, your only concern should be the vague wording of the bill as it stands. Write your representatives about that, but please don't throw a wake and funeral for the Internet if CISPA is passed.

Rambly thoughts are rambly

My sleep schedule has to get adjusted. The last time I had this many people living in the same area as me, was on kibbutz (I waved a sad goodbye to that 15 years ago). So unless I can get used to a lot of talkative traffic not far from my bedroom window, it looks like I'm not gonna be a happy camper if I go to sleep at 5 a.m and start getting disturbed from 7.30 a.m onwards.

Reminders of kibbutz have given me rebellious ideas regarding the bathroom renovations: maybe I should just go all Israeli on that shower, build the shower bed level with the floor, and try to find a magav locally (probably impossible). However, given that visitors to Israel complain consistently about just one Israeli thing—Israeli-style showers, perhaps this is a bad idea. Although, y'know, it's possible that the people who complain just weren't there long enough to realize that that style of shower is perfect in a desert country where water is not meant to be wasted. So: wet down; soap-and-scrub; rinse off = the bathroom does not flood, and then you use the magav/floor squeegee to push what water remains down the drain, practically drying the floor at the same time. Thing is, I don't think I'll be able to convince Landlord&Lady of that.

People call me Miz Fix-it for a reason

Those "DIY opportunities" I mentioned yesterday? Here's the list, in order of importance:

Bathroom:
Rip out existing and badly constructed shower; re-plumb and rebuild from scratch (this includes building brick walls that will actually make the damn space a bathroom [don't ask]). Break out and re-seat toilet (hopefully without breaking the porcelain). Tile walls and floor. Install light and extractor fan. Paint ceiling with high gloss enamel. Use masonry varnish to 'glaze' bricks on exterior walls. Install sliding door on rail (there currently is no door [don't ask]).
Kitchen:
Remove current room divider cabinet...thing. Build in a new one. With bricks. That don't wobble. Install electric counter-top hob. Tile walls above sink; tile new room divider counter-top; tile floor.
Paint:
EVERYTHING! Paint everything– walls: PVA; cabinets and closet doors: enamel; strip and refinish all metal window frames: on-metal enamel. Paint everything white.
Floors:
Wherever there are linoleum tiles, rip up that crap and lay ceramic floor tiles.

There's more than that, mostly little things. One big-ish item involves soundproofing a wall adjoining another tenant, but that's only 'big-ish' in the sense that it's a large-ish wall. Insulating it will involve boxing the wall (extending it outwards by about 3 inches) and filling the space between existing wall and new drywall with layers of polystyrene sheeting. Correctly planned, and with another 2 pairs of hands, that's the work of just 2 or 3 hours, so it's not really a big job.

Getting the bathroom sorted out is a priority because by giving the damn bathroom walls, I get a study. The current 'bathroom' was hastily slapped together, and was left unfinished, essentially, meaning that the room-that-would-be-a-study is currently the room-that-becomes-a-sauna, so my desk, computer, and books are all in the living room right now. This is, as my A would say, suboptimal. And I will fix it, dammit.

And yes, yes I am indeed very glad that I've accumulated a list of skills (and tools!) that enable me to do all of this stuff. Also glad that the tools I recently sold and gave away are those suited only to mechanical stuff, and not the tools needed for plumbing, woodwork, etc.

My only problem is, I have to take it easy for a bit. My back hates me right now and if I want to get any of the above done, I have to be patient, let this ouch heal, and then be careful while I lay bricks, etc.

We're doing the moving thing today and tomorrow, and then Saturday is sure to be an organizational nightmare. I'll try to get the PC set up as soon as possible, but I will have email on my phone, and I'll be very happy to click a button and go "Oh, good. Email from whichever-pal– this means that life is kinda normal somewhere: hooray!"

If you're a woman living in the US, and you're thinking that the "women as livestock" bill won't go further than Georgia...

...you need to sit up and pay attention. You need to feel the very rational fear felt by intelligent, thoughtful people in your country, who know that if it passed in Georgia, that bill can be passed nationally.

ILY-486 is dystopian fiction by Amanda Ching. It's scary as hell. The scariest part? It describes an America that Santorum and others would call just dandy.

I'm not a Margaret Atwood fan (as some of you know), but La Atwood tweeted about this story, as have several other well-known writers. It won't be a waste of your time. Go read.

I needed (really needed) to get on the evil grin that results from saying to Support "Stomp 'em!" but I didn't find even one spam account. I needed (*really* needed) that little evil grin, because I gotta go ~~read~~ wade through so-called education theories written by two academics who have this idea that they absolutely must consult a thesaurus regarding every word, which results in the need to *translate* their-English to ordinary-, can-(maybe)-understand-it-English.

Spammers are bad in more ways than one: they're parasites, and they spoil my fun by suddenly deciding not to spam. Rude bastards.

The Muse is showing more interest in the DWP thing than in STK. And... No. Just *no*. There's no friggin' way that STK is going on hiatus now. Subplots, ending, and I'm done, and I want it to be done, because (ohshit!) polishing ~120K is gonna be a MISSION. And then it has to be edited. And proofread. And then I have to work off of suggestions and corrections from La Editor and the Proofreading Team. That may involve rewrites. And additions and exclusions and chapter re-ordering and all the delightful tinkering with the Time-squeezed-so-tight-it-squeaks time-line that'll come with that.
